Needititus by Rachel Sanfordlyn Shreckengast

Needititus

Do you suffer from Needititus? Needititus is a human condition, in which a person sees an item and says, either out loud, or in their mind, "I need it!". The item itself, can be practical, beautiful, ugly or useless. It's function is not an issue. Phrases such as "I must have it", "I could use that", "I can't live without it" or "That would be perfect", are phrases that are part and parcel with cases of Needititus.

In most cases of Needititus, it is a temporary condition which attacks suddenly. Needititus affects nearly all human beings, at some point or another. The pull of Needititus is extremely strong and most human beings find it difficult to control the condition of Needititus. It comes without warning and attacks the mind most furiously.

The first step in controlling Needititus, is to admit that it is a problem that you face. Once you admit that you occasionally suffer bouts of Needititus, you can take steps to control the condition. Admittance to the problem is of utmost importance, as after this step, you can take steps to control your bouts with Needititus. Below, you will find one method to help you control your bouts with Needititus.

The Notebook Method of Dealing with Needititus

1. Keep a notebook with you at all times, to track your bouts of Needititus. Write down the item, the price and a description of the item.

2. Once every one or two months, go through the items listed in your Needititus notebook. Cross out those items that you no longer need as badly as you did when you had your attack of Needititus.

3. Mark the length of time that has passed for those items that remain.

4. At six months, repeat the process covered in numbers 2 and 3.

5. At one year, repeat the process once again.

6. Once an item has been on your list for one year, it is time to take steps to aquire the item. First, check with friends to see if they own the item and can let you borrow it for a short time period. You may still find that you don't actually need the item you thought you did.

7. If you can not borrow the item, or find that you still think you need the item...it is time to shop around for the best price. Do not skip this step, if you skip this step you will overpay for the item and will have missed the point of this method.

8. Once you have shopped around and found the best price for the item, budget for the item. Make sure that the price of the item fits into your budget and you can afford it. It should fit into your budget without any hardship to you or your family.

9. Once you have saved the money or fit the price of the item into your budget, it is time to go shopping and purchase the item you so desperately want (or need, whichever the case may be).

10. Be proud of yourself for aquiring an item that you truly need at a good price.

If you aren't willing to delay your gratification for an item, and you aren't willing to do all of the work involved in aquiring that item, then you truly do not need that item. Excuses abound. Perhaps you don't have the "time", the "patience" or the "willpower" to take so many steps to aquire an item. Recognize that all of these excuses are simply that...excuses. Not being willing to take steps to insure that you aquire an item you truly want or need, means that you are not willing to work to insure that you are spending your money wisely. It also means that you are not willing to truly think about your purchases. Please be aware that I'm not saying that you have to do this with every purchase you make. After all, you need to purchase some things regularly and can not delay the purchase. Such items include food that are used to sustain you or your rent/mortgage, that is used to shelter you. Let's suppose though, that you want instead to purchase an expensive gourmet mustard that you've heard tastes wonderful. Use this method on items that you really don't need to sustain your life, items such as that expensive gourmet mustard.

Items not needed to sustain your life will be different for everyone. It may be a piece of designer clothing, gourmet foods, a small kitchen appliance, a piece of furniture or even a fancier car, boat, house or other item. The entire point of this exercise is to truly think about your purchases, before you make them. It will help you avoid mistakes, help you learn to delay your gratification and help you to understand how much actual work it takes to aquire that item. The work aspect is important, after all you made an income by working...why would you want to waste the money you've earned on items that aren't worth your time and patience?
