Yard Sale Highlights from May 4, 2002 by Rachel Sanfordlyn Shreckengast
Yard Sale Highlights
In this article, I will be sharing some of the yard sale and thrift store
purchases that we made on May 4, 2002. The yard sale highlight articles are
purely educational and are meant to show some items that I've personally found
at yard sales (or thrift shops). My hope is to give naysayers a peek at what
types of things can be found at yard sales and allow them to make up their own
minds on whether they'd like to see these types of savings.

For those of you who are wondering how I made money on the stamp books, I
simply did a little bit of research. I initially purchased the books for
graphics for this page (the D&R Merchandise stamp books have cute frugal
graphics). My husband happened to share a comment that someone had made upon
seeing him bring the books to the car ("I remember those. I wonder if you can still cash them
in?"). We got home and I put the names of the books in a search engine. I
didn't come up with anything for the D&R Merchandise books, but I did find
out who the Gold Bond Books were owned by. From there, I found out that they
now offer a web points program (goldpoints.com). I signed up for the program
and sent off a customer service email asking whether I could still cash in the
books. It turns out that each book that is filled with stamps is worth $1.50.
Among the empty books, I had purchased three Gold Bond Books that were filled,
so that means that the value is $4.50. Once you subtract my 50 cents purchase
price and include shipping costs, I have a profit of $3.00. I'm still working
on finding information for the D&R Merchandise stamp books, but I already know
their potential value as it's listed on the back of the books. If I can still
cash them in, I will receive $3.00 per filled book and I have four filled books.
This equals a potential value of $12.00 minus any shipping costs. Perhaps the
most interesting tidbit is that these stamp books are from the early to mid 1960's.
Onto more bargains. The overalls should fit Griffin sometime next summer.
The tag read $3.99, but that particular tag color was 50% off at the thrift store,
so they ended up costing us $1.99 instead. The little orange graphic is a
cute tiger and the patch has a safari theme, the overalls are in perfect
condition. The next item is the winter coat for Griffin, which is a heavy jean
coat with little leather patches here and there. We have plenty of
coats for our three girls because we save everything that is in good condition,
but the majority of their coats are either pink or frilly so they won't work for
Griffin as he gets older. With this coat, we haggled the price down from $3.00
to $1.00. At the same yard sale, we purchased an elephant outfit (with ears &
it roars, that can double as a Halloween costume if need be) which we also paid
$1.00 for. At a yard sale last week, I picked up a record player for $4.00
(talked down from a price of $10.00). This week I hit a goldmine with
records/albums in perfect condition with most of them at 25 cents each (a
few Sinatras were $1.00 each). Everything from Sinatra to Hall & Oates to
Christmas and Halloween albums.
I consider my best deal this week to be the food processor. Like the
overalls, the food processor had a 50% off color tag. It was marked at $6.00
and we purchased it for $3.00. I've been wanting a food processor for a while
now, but was hesitant to pay retail prices for one. Our favorite thrift store
has a 7 day return policy (in case things don't work) so we were confident that
we could return it if it didn't work. I'm absolutely thrilled to say that it
works perfectly and will get plenty of use when I prepare foods for storage this
fall. It should also save some wear on my hands (I have carpal tunnel). Not a
bad week and I hope the rest of the summer treats us as well as she did this
week.
Best Wishes,
